Justice has prevailed, Chicklets! You will recall when Heather Mallick quit her column at the Globe and Mail, leaving a gaping void in my Saturday mornings and also my heart. The smartypants CBC has scooped her up and you can read her first column at cbc.ca. Yay!
I also heard her on CBC radio this weekend, as a guest on Go. Alarmingly, her voice did not match my idea of her voice. I guess I expected something less soothing. She announced her intention to watch the Academy Awards tonight (even though she’s been boycotting them since 1991) because Jon Stewart is hosting. She predicts, though, that he’ll be gently funny but basically nonthreatening. Why? Because he has a new $6 million mortgage on a place in New York. People with mortgages, apparently, are forced to make all kinds of deals with the devil, snapping off little bits of their souls and selling them to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and other axis-of-evil types. She looked back unfondly at her own “decade of shame,” dark years spent paying down the mortgage. Score one for the listless renters among us, Chicklets. At least we can claim the moral high ground.
Go Brokeback!
